Gillian Frank is an Assistant Professor in the History of the Modern United States at Trinity College Dublin, affiliated with the Department of History. Her work examines intersections of gender, sexuality, religion, and race in postwar US culture and politics, focusing on how progressive and reactionary movements shape public values through religion, media, and policy. She is completing a manuscript on liberal religion’s role in abortion advocacy pre-Roe v. Wade and hosts the podcast Sexing History.
Her research spans topics like anti-abortion politics in Michigan, Anita Bryant’s anti-gay campaigns, and the cultural impact of 1970s discos. Teaching includes undergraduate courses on reproductive politics, the sexual revolution, and American political culture (1939-1989), as well as an MA-level gender theory course. She actively mentors PhD students researching 20th-century US gender/sexuality history.
Frank’s interdisciplinary work bridges scholarship and public engagement through podcasts, columns (e.g., More Than Missionary at The Revealer), and edited volumes like Devotions and Desires (2018). She emphasizes the lived experiences of marginalized groups in shaping social movements and policy debates.
