Professor Gillian Dutton is the Director of the Externship Program and Professor of Lawyering Skills at Seattle University School of Law. She holds roles as a Korematsu Center Faculty Fellow and advisor to the International Refugee Assistance Project and International Law Society. Her expertise spans clinical pedagogy, language access, civil rights, and cross-cultural communication. She co-chairs AALS committees on international externships and clinical education. Dutton earned a B.A. (cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) from UC San Diego, an M.A. in Chinese Studies, and a J.D. from UC Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law.
Her research focuses on improving language access in legal systems, including negotiating consent decrees for LEP clients and developing ABA language access standards. She previously directed the Refugee and Immigrant Advocacy Project at UW Law School, representing migrant farm workers. Fluent in Spanish, French, German, and Mandarin, she emphasizes multilingual legal practice.
Awarded the 1999 Charles A. Goldmark Award and 2005 Golden Door Award, Dutton’s work bridges legal education and social justice. Her externship program innovations and advocacy for LEP clients have shaped national policies in clinical legal education and language equity.
