Gillian Hutchens serves as a University Teacher and Law Clinic Co-ordinator at the University of Sheffield's School of Law, where she oversees the Sheffield Freelaw Clinic—a student-run pro bono initiative providing free legal services to the community while advancing experiential learning.
Her expertise centers on pro bono law and clinical legal education, with research examining the integration of academic theory and practical legal service. As module convenor for the FreeLaw and Special Project Pro bono Law modules, she develops curricula that immerse students in real-client representation while emphasizing professional ethics and Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) compliance.
Hutchens manages all operational aspects of the Sheffield Freelaw Clinic, including supervising student teams, reviewing legal advice quality, and redesigning clinic policies to align with the School's civic engagement strategy. She collaborates closely with the Director of Civic Engagement and senior leadership to ensure the clinic meets strategic objectives while maintaining strict confidentiality protocols for client cases.
Under her coordination, the clinic functions as both an educational laboratory for law students and a vital community resource, bridging academic training with public service through structured student supervision and adherence to professional legal standards.
