Professor Gillian Bendelow is a sociologist of health and medicine at the University of Sussex's School of Applied Social Science. Her research focuses on the intersection of emotions, health, and illness, emphasizing the sociocultural dimensions of pain, gender, mental health, and chronic illness. She holds a British Academy Senior Research Fellowship for collaborative work with Sussex Police and Sussex Partnership Mental Health Trust investigating Section 136 detentions of mentally ill individuals under the Mental Health Act 1983.
Her work integrates Hochschild's social theory of emotions, exploring how biological emotions are socially shaped. Key contributions include sociocultural pain frameworks (e.g., Pain and Gender), trauma-informed prison design, and mental health policing critiques. Over 30 years, her studies span childhood health beliefs, biomedicine critique, and interdisciplinary health policy analysis.
Her most recent research examines the complex interplay between mental health crises, police responses, and institutional accountability. This program highlights the need for systemic reforms in mental health support systems.
