Giles Masters is a Lecturer in Music at King's College London (KCL) and concurrently holds a position as a Junior Research Fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford. He specializes in 19th- and 20th-century musicology with a focus on transnational cultural politics, institutional history, and material culture. His work examines how music intersects with geopolitical transformations and social change.
Dr. Masters earned his PhD at King's College London and held a post at the University of Nottingham before his fellowship at Oxford. He is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) and teaches modules on music since 1800, encompassing both classical and popular traditions.
His research projects include Let’s Build a Town!, a music-theatre project for children (8–10 years) developed with Music at Oxford. Recent publications explore topics like the ISCM Festival’s role in technocratic internationalism and the cultural implications of industrial imagery in 1930s music.
Awarded the RMA’s Jerome Roche Prize in 2024 for his article on interwar musical internationalism, Masters’ work bridges disciplinary boundaries between music, politics, and transnational history.
