Yvonne Liao is a Research Fellow in the Faculty of Music and Department of Music at the University of Oxford (2017–2020), with additional affiliations at The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH) and St Cross College. She previously held part-time and teaching roles at King's College London and Hong Kong Baptist University.

Her research integrates Music with International History and Human Geography, focusing on colonialism, cultural diplomacy, and treaty port societies. Her work explores music's role in urban colonial contexts, particularly in wartime Shanghai's refugee cafés.
Liao's 2016 article examines musical landscapes in wartime Shanghai, blending themes of cultural identity and urban colonialism. Her research output reflects interdisciplinary engagement with historical, geographical, and musical frameworks.
Scientific Awards:
- Recipient of the 2014 David Sanjek Memorial Graduate Student Paper Prize (U.S. Branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music).
- 2017 Jerome Roche Prize from the Royal Musical Association for early-career scholarship.
Liao has served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Part-Time Lecturer, supervising students in music departments at King's College London and Hong Kong Baptist University, with PhD examiners including Prof Daniel Grimley and Dr Barak Kushner.
