Dr. Tim Liao is a Professor of Sociology and Statistics at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. He holds the LAS Alumni Distinguished Professorial Scholar title and serves as President of the Sequence Analysis Association. His research focuses on quantitative social science methods, inequality, life course analysis, population studies, and collective memory. Liao earned his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has held numerous editorial leadership roles, including Deputy Editor of Demography and Editor of Sociological Methodology.
His research explores topics such as migrant workers’ health in Hong Kong, wage inequality linked to unemployment, and the sociological implications of statues like Wall Street’s Charging Bull. He has pioneered methodologies for analyzing life course sequences and multidomain social trends. Liao’s work bridges statistical rigor with sociocultural analysis, addressing global issues like pandemic mortality disparities and environmental policy impacts on migration.
Key awards include the ASA Methodology’s Paul F. Lazarsfeld Award (2021) and a 2017–2018 CASBS fellowship.
