Prof. Dr. Gijsbert Vonk is a full-time Professor of Social Security Law at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Law, with a part-time chair in Social Rights at Maastricht University. His expertise spans public law, European law, and socio-economic human rights, particularly focusing on poverty, migration, and social security systems. He leads a research project funded by the Instituut Gak (2023–2027) examining how human dignity can counter welfare dystopias caused by exclusion and digitalization. Vonk has held roles such as head of legal affairs at the Social Insurance Bank and received the VAR-Michiels Prize (2015). His work critiques harsh social policies and advocates for stronger social rights.
