Giampaolo Rossetti is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical, Life and Environmental Sustainability Sciences at the University of Parma, where he holds a PhD in Ecology and has authored over 140 publications in limnology and aquatic ecology. He serves as contact person for two Italian Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER-Italy) sites and represents the University of Parma in the LifeWatch Italia Joint Research Unit General Assembly since 2014.
His research focuses on the ecology, distribution, and taxonomy of rotifers and microcrustaceans—particularly copepods and ostracods—in diverse freshwater ecosystems including high-altitude lakes, temporary pools, and springs across Mediterranean regions. He integrates field surveys with taxonomic analysis to investigate biodiversity patterns, climate change impacts, and biogeographical processes, with significant contributions to ostracod systematics and freshwater conservation.
Recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on Mediterranean freshwater biodiversity, with frequent descriptions of new ostracod species from understudied regions (Eritrea, Greece, Italy) and analyses of climate change effects on mountain lake communities. His work increasingly incorporates cognitive studies of non-marine ostracods and large-scale georeferenced biodiversity datasets.
Professor Rossetti actively mentors students through the PhD program in Evolutionary Biology and Ecology and supervises Master’s theses in Environmental and Resource Sciences. He previously coordinated the EU Marie Curie Research Training Network SexAsex project (2004-2008) as deputy coordinator and research unit manager.
His laboratory work is embedded within the LTER-Italy network, where he manages long-term monitoring sites for freshwater ecosystems, and collaborates internationally on projects documenting freshwater biodiversity in volcanic lakes, sulfidic caves, and island archipelagos.
