Jason Stockwell is a Professor at the University of Vermont (UVM), affiliated with the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources. He holds a PhD from the University of Toronto (1996) and a BSc from Northland College (1991). His research focuses on aquatic ecology, food web dynamics, climate change impacts on lakes, and disturbance effects on limnological processes. He has held roles including station chief at the USGS Lake Superior Biological Station and pelagic ecologist at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute.
Key research areas include migration behavior of aquatic invertebrates, winter ecology in lake systems, and the consequences of climate change on biodiversity and ecosystem services. He leads the Rubenstein Lab, collaborating on global projects like CAMEO to study trade-offs in fishery ecosystems.
Recent work emphasizes climate-driven shifts in fish phenology, invasive species impacts, and the role of winter conditions in phytoplankton dynamics. His studies leverage long-term ecological datasets and innovative methods like under-ice mesocosms to explore lake resilience.
Grants include the REU Site on Human Impacts in Lake Champlain and collaborative NSF proposals. His work bridges field observations with modeling, addressing both local (Lake Champlain) and global freshwater systems.
