Dr. Gerrit van den Bergh is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Life Sciences (SEALS), University of Wollongong, and a member of the Centre for Archaeological Science. He holds an ARC Future Fellowship (2011–2016) and has been at the University of Wollongong since 2015. His primary research focuses on Quaternary vertebrate faunas, hominin evolution in Wallacea, and insular faunal evolution. Key projects include investigations of Homo floresiensis on Flores and hominin activity in the Philippines.

Research interests span palaeontology, stratigraphy, and archaeological science, with particular emphasis on Southeast Asian island faunas. He has supervised over 20 higher degree research projects, including studies on Flores' So'a Basin stratigraphy, proboscidean diets, and geomagnetic dating.
His work has received significant funding including ARC Discovery Projects and infrastructure grants. Notable contributions include redating Homo erectus fossils in Java and identifying the earliest hominin activity in the Philippines (709ka).
