Gerrit-Jan Carsjens

Gerrit-Jan Carsjens is an Associate Professor in Land Use Planning at Wageningen University & Research. He holds a MSc and PhD from Wageningen University, focusing on GIS-based planning support systems. His roles include teaching courses in strategic planning and environmental management, supervising theses, and examining academic programs. He chairs the Examining Board Environment and Landscape (EBEL) and serves as Honorary Vice President of the International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (CIGR). Additionally, he is a Visiting Professor at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, Greece.

His research emphasizes strategic spatial planning, scenario planning, environmental impact assessment, and food-health intersections. He has led international projects in Southeast Asia with FAO and the World Bank, focusing on livestock and environmental sustainability. He regularly contributes to scientific conferences and organizes workshops for PhD students. Current projects include the SUMEX initiative.

Teaching responsibilities span bachelor and master programs in Landscape Architecture and Spatial Planning, including courses like 'Studio Strategic Planning' and 'Foodscapes, Urban Lifestyles and Transition.' His work bridges theory and practice, integrating spatial analysis with participatory methods to address urban and regional challenges.
