Prof. Dr. Gerhard Winter is a Full Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmaceutics at the Department of Pharmacy, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich). He leads the Pharmaceutical Technology research group, focusing on protein stabilization, freeze-drying, drug delivery systems, and colloidal formulations. His work bridges academic research and industry, with over 40 patents and 170 publications.
Winter studied Pharmacy at the University of Heidelberg, earning his Ph.D. in 1987. He held industrial roles at Merck and Boehringer Mannheim before joining LMU in 1999. He co-founded Coriolis Pharma GmbH in 2008 to commercialize formulation technologies.
Research interests include parenteral drug delivery, novel drying technologies, and protein aggregation prevention. He supervises over 60 theses, mentoring students in areas like lipid-based depots, silk-based nanoparticles, and freeze-drying optimization.
Recent articles highlight advancements in microwave-assisted freeze-drying, mRNA-LNP stability, and cyclodextrin applications. His lab explores cutting-edge methods like α-relaxation measurements and molecular dynamics simulations for formulation development.
Winter collaborates with industry and academia, serving on editorial boards and scientific advisory boards. His innovations in drug delivery and stabilization have significant impacts on biopharmaceutical production and patient care.
