Gerhard F. Swiegers

Distinguished Senior Professor Gerhard Swiegers is affiliated with the University of Wollongong and leads research at the Australian Institute for Innovative Materials and Intelligent Polymer Research Institute. He is a Professor (2010–2022) and Senior Professor (2023–present), with a focus on electrochemical catalysis and renewable hydrogen production.

• Education: PhD in Chemistry (1991, University of Connecticut); BSc (Hons) in Chemistry (Nelson Mandela University, 1982).

His research explores electrochemistry, catalysis, and materials engineering, particularly bioinspired systems for hydrogen generation and water oxidation. Recent publications analyze capillary-fed electrolysis cells, Mn(III) complexes, and photocatalytic bactericidal agents.

Key awards include two DuPont Innovation Awards (2008, 2011), the American Publishers Prose Award (2012), and the NAB Excellence in Agribusiness Award (2010). His commercialization efforts have founded 7 spin-off companies and secured $320M in private investment.
