Gerhard Abstreiter is a Carl von Linde Senior Fellow at the Technical University of Munich's Institute for Advanced Study (since 2010). He holds a PhD in Physics from TUM (1975) and became a full professor and director of the Walter Schottky Institute in 1987. His research focuses on semiconductor nanostructures, quantum dots, and nanowire-based devices for electronics, optoelectronics, and quantum information. He has authored over 550 publications and received prestigious awards including the Leibniz Prize and Max Born Medal.
Key research interests include molecular beam epitaxy, self-assembly in nanowires, and optoelectronic devices. Notable achievements include pioneering studies on quantum dot molecules and nanowire lasers. His work bridges semiconductor physics with applications in quantum technologies and bio-sensing.
Scientific awards include membership in the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and acatech. His recent publications (2011–2020) emphasize nanowire optoelectronics, epitaxial growth, and quantum phenomena in confined structures.
