Gerd Mittelstädt is an alumnus of the University of Potsdam, where he earned a degree in Biochemistry in 2009. Currently, he works as a Researcher at the Ferrier Research Institute, part of Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.
- Research Focus: Drug development through biomolecule analysis and targeted inhibitor design.
- Key Projects: Understanding bacterial metabolic enzymes for antibiotics, establishing a vaccine delivery platform, and testing cryo-EM for vaccine particle screening.
Collaboration: He maintains a five-year collaboration with Prof. Dr. Petra Wendler at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biology, University of Potsdam, centered on Formate Dehydrogenase research. His recent UP Reconnect visit in December 2023 provided critical cryo-EM expertise.
International Perspective: While scientific standards in labs are universal, he notes material and instrument availability challenges in New Zealand compared to Germany, offset by the Kiwi work culture.
