Gerasimos Theotokatos is the DNV Professor of Safety of Marine Systems and Director of the Maritime Safety Research Centre (MSRC) at the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering, University of Strathclyde. He holds a PhD and MEng from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in Marine and Mechanical Engineering.
His research is dedicated to advancing maritime safety, energy efficiency, and sustainability through the development of scientific models and digital twin technologies. He focuses on holistic lifecycle management of marine systems, integrating risk assessment, energy optimization, and environmental performance, particularly in cyber-physical and autonomous vessels.
His recent publications highlight a strong trend toward decarbonization, with research on hydrogen, methanol, and LNG as alternative marine fuels, alongside digital tools for health monitoring and safety analysis in hybrid and autonomous ships. His work bridges theoretical modeling and industrial application, supporting green shipping transitions.

Prof. Theotokatos leads and co-investigates multiple high-impact research projects, including AI-PASSPORT and OLDENDORFF Sustainable Shipping Research Centre, funded by Innovate UK and industry partners. He actively mentors students and contributes to academic leadership through editorial roles in journals such as Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part M and Journal of Marine Science and Engineering.
He is a key figure in the MSRC, a leading industry-university partnership involving Royal Caribbean and DNV, driving innovation in safe and sustainable maritime transportation. His work is central to advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to industry, innovation, and climate action.
