Gerardo Martí serves as Chair and William R. Kenan, Jr. Endowed Professor of Sociology at Davidson College. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Southern California and a B.A. from Pepperdine University. Martí has received significant recognition including the L. Richardson King Professorship (2009) and the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professorship (2021).
His research focuses on race, religion, and social change, with particular expertise in multiracial congregations, American Christianity, and religious innovation. Martí has held numerous leadership positions including President of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion (2022-2025), President of the Association for the Sociology of Religion (2021-2024), and Editor-in-Chief of Sociology of Religion: A Quarterly Review (2012-2021).
Martí's scholarly publications reveal a consistent focus on the intersection of race and religion in American contexts, with particular attention to megachurch phenomena, multiracial congregations, and Latino Protestant communities. His work demonstrates how religious institutions navigate diversity while maintaining cohesion, and how religious innovation occurs within contemporary American culture.
