Professor Gerard McElwee is a leading academic in rural entrepreneurship and illegal economic activity studies at York Business School, York St John University. He holds a PhD in Farm Diversification and an HDR (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches). His research focuses on rural sustainability, illicit entrepreneurship, and food fraud, with consultancy work spanning Mexico, Zambia, Oman, Italy, and the UK. He has supervised over 20 PhD theses and examined 10 doctoral completions.
Education: BA Sociology, PGCE, MBA, PhD (Farm Diversification), and HDR. Professional roles include volunteer ranger for the North York Moors National Park and trustee of the North York Moors Association.
