Hichem Amichi is an Associate Professor in Agricultural Economics at PURPAN School of Engineering (École d'Ingénieurs de PURPAN), affiliated with LISST–Dynamiques Rurales at the University of Toulouse, France. His research focuses on land and water management in irrigated agriculture, agroecological transition, and sustainability of agricultural value chains, with particular emphasis on North Africa (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia) and France (Occitanie region).
Professor Amichi's research interests include institutional arrangements in agriculture, collective action in biosourced sectors, and sustainable value chain development. His work examines how farmers, suppliers, policymakers, and institutional stakeholders negotiate resilience in agri-food systems through case studies. He is particularly interested in mapping innovative practices and understanding farmers' underlying logics in transitioning toward more sustainable agricultural systems.
His recent publications (2020-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on agroecological transition in North African irrigated plains, collective action in French biosourced sectors (hemp, wool, leather), and sustainable value chain development. His research combines institutional analysis with practical case studies, often employing interdisciplinary approaches that bridge economics, political science, and environmental studies.
Professor Amichi serves on the editorial board of Cahiers Agricultures since 2018 and has co-edited special issues on agricultural collectives and trajectories of young rural people in irrigated agriculture. His work has been published in journals such as Renewable Agriculture and Food Systems, Regional Environmental Change, and Économie rurale.
As a supervisor, Professor Amichi holds an HDR (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches) from the University of Toulouse, authorizing him to supervise PhD students. He teaches courses on agricultural value chains, development economics, political and economic environment of the farm, and professional writing. His teaching emphasizes practical application, critical thinking, and argumentation skills on contemporary agricultural issues.
Professor Amichi leads multiple research projects with funding exceeding €1 million, including FADMA, FAVA, and DURFAC, which examine sustainable agricultural value chains in the Maghreb and Occitanie region. His international collaborations span France, Algeria, Tunisia, and other North African countries, reflecting his commitment to comparative research on agricultural systems.
