Gerard Leavey is a Full Professor in the School of Psychology at Ulster University and Director of the Bamford Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing. He holds Visiting Professorships at King's College London and another institution. His expertise spans mental health services research, focusing on marginalized populations including minority ethnic groups, refugees, and older adults. With a BSc in Policy Studies (University of North London), MSc in Public Health (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine), and PhD in Medical Sociology (UCL), his career bridges social science and healthcare.
Research interests include mental health disparities, intergenerational programs, and community-based interventions. Notable projects include an EU-funded initiative addressing social exclusion via intergenerational exchange and leadership in the NI Clinical Research Network-Mental Health. His work aligns with UN SDGs related to health equity and sustainable communities.
Publications (2020–2025) explore topics such as psychotropic medication trends, loneliness in aging populations, and sport-based mental health awareness. He collaborates internationally on pandemic health analyses and co-develops interventions like the CHOICE Project. Supervises 7 PhD researchers and advises on grants including the Victim Improvement Package (VIP) for crime victims.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Bamford Centre, co-directs the ADR-NI, and collaborates across Northern Ireland's health research networks. Current projects involve urban health regeneration initiatives (Belfast THRI) and policy-focused studies on healthcare access.
