Gerard Campbell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on Drosophila development, particularly the regulation of gene expression and morphogenesis. He joined the Department in 1998 after postdoctoral work at the University of Western Ontario and Columbia University, following his PhD from the University of Leicester.
His research explores transcriptional repression mechanisms, such as those involving Brinker and corepressors like Groucho, and the role of gene expression gradients in shaping organ development. His lab uses Drosophila models to study developmental pathways with implications for human diseases like cancer. Key projects include understanding how Brinker gradients control gene expression patterns and the cellular mechanisms behind appendage morphology.
- Education:
- PhD, 1987, University of Leicester (advisor: Peter Shelton)
- Postdoctoral studies: University of Western Ontario (advisor: Stanley Caveney) and Columbia University (advisor: Andrew Tomlinson)
His publications highlight work on corepressor interactions, morphogen gradients, and developmental signaling pathways. Current lab members include Dylan Nelson, Olivia Parks, and Jacob Mckenzie. While no scientific awards are listed, his contributions to developmental genetics are evident through his extensive publication record and mentorship.
