Georgios Belibasakis is a Professor of Clinical Oral Infection Biology at Karolinska Institutet, Department of Dental Medicine. He holds leadership roles as Head of the Division of Oral Health and Periodontology, Head of Research, and Head of International Affairs at the Department. His research focuses on oral microbiology, host-microbe interactions, and systemic health connections. He has a PhD in Oral Microbiology from Umeå University and a clinical MSc in Periodontology from Queen Mary University of London, alongside academic qualifications like the Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (UK).
Education: Studied dentistry at Aristotle University (1999), PhD in Oral Microbiology (Umeå, 2004), MSc in Periodontology (Queen Mary, 2009), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (2009). He also holds a Docentur (Habilitation) in Oral Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Zurich (2012).
Research Interests: Investigates microbial ecology of oral diseases, including periodontitis and peri-implantitis, and links between oral health and systemic conditions. Key areas include oral microbiome dynamics, biofilm pathogenesis, and diagnostic innovations. His work bridges clinical and molecular approaches to improve preventive and therapeutic strategies.
Grants & Collaborations: Lead on grants from the Swedish Research Council, FWF Austrian Science Fund, and regional dental research groups. Notable projects include studying the FtxA toxin of Filifactor alocis and microbial diagnostics in dental practice.
