Professor Luigi Nibali is a Professor of Periodontology and Academic Lead of the Postgraduate Periodontology Program at King's College London. He is also the Head of the Centre for Host-Microbiome Interactions within the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences. His academic journey includes a dentistry degree from the University of Catania, Italy, followed by an MSc and PhD in Periodontology from the UCL Eastman Dental Institute. He has held roles at Queen Mary University London as a Senior Lecturer and Reader before joining King's in 2019.
His research focuses on genetics, microbial risk factors, and host-microbiome interactions in periodontal disease. Notable achievements include proposing the concepts of 'periodontal infectogenomics' and 'genetic dysbiosis.' He has authored two books on periodontology and dysbiosis and received prestigious awards like the Fish Prize and Socransky Award. His clinical practice emphasizes minimally-invasive treatments for complex periodontal cases.
Key research trends include genetic biomarkers, dietary interventions (e.g., fasting-mimicking diets), and the systemic impacts of periodontitis. Over 60 peer-reviewed articles span periodontal therapy efficacy, microbiological profiling, and oral-systemic links. His work has been supported by grants from the NIH, MRC, and British Society of Periodontology.
He leads multidisciplinary teams in the Centre for Host-Microbiome Interactions, exploring microbiome roles in diseases like periodontitis and Alzheimer’s. Collaborations include studies on tele-dentistry during the pandemic and immunodeficiency-related oral health challenges.
