George Zittis is a Research Scientist at the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C) of The Cyprus Institute, leading the Climate Downscaling & Extremes Research Group. He holds a BSc in Geology, MSc in Meteorology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and a PhD in Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences from The Cyprus Institute (2016). His research focuses on climate change impacts, regional climate modeling, Mediterranean climate dynamics, and extreme weather events.
Key research interests include climate statistics, land-atmosphere interactions, and climate change education. He has contributed to projects like EMME-CARE, SOCLIMPACT, and CORDEX (WCRP). Over 60 peer-reviewed publications highlight his work on climate extremes, with recent studies analyzing accelerated warming trends in Mediterranean regions and ultra-extreme heatwave projections for the Middle East and North Africa.
Dr. Zittis serves on the Editorial Board of Regional Environmental Change and the Steering Group of MedCLIVAR, actively engaging in climate initiatives across the Mediterranean and Middle East. His work emphasizes translating climate science into actionable policy and education strategies.
