George Stoupas

George Stoupas is an Associate Teaching Professor at Wake Forest University's Department of Counseling since July 2022. He holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Florida Atlantic University (2016), an M.S. in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University (2011), and a B.A. in Political Science & Classical Studies from the University of Florida (2005). His career spans private practice, clinical supervision, and program management in substance use disorder treatment, alongside academic leadership roles in counselor education.

Research Interests: Stoupas focuses on addiction/substance use counseling, harm reduction, recovery identity development, spirituality in counseling, couples and family dynamics, counselor attitudes toward addiction, and attachment theory. His work emphasizes non-judgmental, strengths-based approaches for diverse populations, including LGBTQ+ individuals and adolescents.

Publications & Presentations: His recent research explores intersections between gender/sexual identity and addiction recovery, ethical counseling practices, and mindfulness applications. Key presentations address addiction language reform, community college counseling training, and opioid overdose prevention.

Awards & Service: He received the Stewart Distinguished Teaching Award in 2018. Current roles include Addiction Counseling Program Coordinator at Wake Forest, editorial board member for The Journal of Addiction & Offender Counseling, and leadership in the International Association of Addictions and Offender Counselors (IAAOC). Previously, he served on the Florida Behavioral Health Advisory Council (2017–2022) and co-founded Rebel Recovery Florida (2017–2020).

Certifications & Memberships: Licensed in multiple states (LCMHC, LMFT, LPC), he is a Master Certified Addiction Professional and certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Professional affiliations include the American Counseling Association (ACA), ICEEFT, and ACES.
