George Springston serves as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science within Norwich University's College of Arts & Sciences, holding this appointment continuously since 2002 with active research and teaching responsibilities.
His academic credentials include:
- M.Sc. in Geology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst
- B.Sc. in Geology from Clemson University
Dr. Springston specializes in superficial and bedrock geologic mapping, landslide and natural hazard evaluation, stream geomorphology, and geographic information systems. With over 30 major mapping projects and multiple landslide inventories completed for the Vermont Geological Survey since 1996, his fieldwork has been presented at conferences including the New England Intercollegiate Geologic Conference and Vermont Geological Society events.
His 2023 publication on two decades of Vermont landslide research exemplifies his focus on regional geological hazard assessment through collaborative field studies, integrating geospatial analysis with practical risk evaluation methodologies.
He actively mentors undergraduate researchers through projects examining streambank stability in Northfield, glacial readvance patterns in Plainfield and Barre, and gully erosion mechanics in Barre Town, frequently collaborating with civil engineering faculty.
Professional leadership includes former presidency and current executive committee service for the Vermont Geological Society, alongside memberships in the Geological Society of America and American Geophysical Union.
