Prof. George Mather is an Honorary Professor of Experimental Psychology at the University of Sussex, having previously served as a Professor at the University of Lincoln (Emeritus since retirement). He holds a PhD from the University of Reading and a BA(Hons) in Psychology from the University of Sheffield. His research focuses on sensory processes, perception, visual arts, and motion perception, with notable work on tennis line-call analysis and visual illusions. Mather has authored numerous articles on topics such as motion after-effects, biological motion perception, and the psychology of art.
His research emphasizes perceptual uncertainties in sports officiating, such as tennis line calls, and explores how visual illusions arise from neural noise and motion processing. Key contributions include the 'Turbine Blade Illusion' and studies on spatiotemporal interpolation in LED displays. Mather received the Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship in 2023 for investigating visual motion perception illusions.
He has developed interactive demos on motion perception, including demonstrations of the kinetic depth effect, biological motion, and motion-induced position shifts. His work bridges psychology, neuroscience, and art, highlighting interdisciplinary approaches to understanding visual perception.
