Dr. Peter Lush is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Psychology at the University of Sussex. His research focuses on phenomenological control, demand characteristics in experimental psychology, and the interplay between consciousness, hypnosis, and perception. Lush holds a BSc in Neuroscience with Cognitive Science (2011–2013), an MSc in Cognitive Neuroscience (2013–2014), and a PhD in Psychology (2014–2017), all from the University of Sussex.
His work examines how contextual cues influence subjective experiences, particularly in hypnotic and non-hypnotic contexts. Key areas include the role of expectation in perceptual experiences, methodological issues in consciousness research, and the development of tools like the Sussex-Waterloo Scale of Hypnotizability (SWASH). He critiques experimental confounds such as demand characteristics and advocates for rigorous research practices to mitigate biases in scientific writing and interpretation.
Lush’s publications span topics like the rubber hand illusion, trait phenomenological control, and the ethical dimensions of scientific communication. His articles emphasize the need for critical evaluation of experimental designs to avoid misinterpretations of perceptual and cognitive phenomena.
He contributes to courses on research reform and open science, as well as the neuroscience of consciousness. His recent work highlights challenges in interpreting perceptual illusions and the importance of phenomenological control in shaping conscious experience.
