George Lovell is a Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Washington, with a dual appointment in the Department of Law, Societies, and Justice. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (1997) and has been at UW since 2001. His research focuses on legal processes, political institutions, American political development, and constitutional theory, examining how law influences political participation, judicial power, and social justice organizations like labor unions.

Research interests include civil rights, constitutional law, immigration, interest groups, and labor law. His major works include This is Not Civil Rights (2012), Legislative Deferrals (2003), and Union by Law (2020, co-authored). He has also published on topics such as legal claims in political encounters, 19th-century labor legislation, and Supreme Court decisions on federal labor laws.
Administrative roles include Divisional Dean of Social Sciences (2017–2022), Chair of Political Science (2014–2017), Harry Bridges Endowed Chair in Labor Studies (2011–2014), and Director of the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies (2011–2014). He teaches courses on constitutional law, the U.S. Supreme Court, law and social change, and labor studies.
