Dr. George Goodwin is a King’s Prize Fellow at the Wolfson Sensory, Pain and Regeneration Centre (SPaRC) within King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. His research focuses on understanding the role of silent nociceptors in arthritis pain, employing innovative techniques like in vivo calcium imaging and mouse models. He recently received the Versus Arthritis Career Development Award (2025–2030) to advance this work, which aims to identify new therapeutic targets for chronic pain management.
Dr. Goodwin’s expertise includes developing specialized imaging methods and genetic tools to study joint nerve activation in inflammatory conditions. His work bridges basic science and clinical translation, with collaborations aimed at improving analgesic drug development. He credits his academic mentorship to the late Professor Steve McMahon and current mentor Dr. Franziska Denk.
Research Highlights:
- Mouse models of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
- Spontaneous sensory neuron activity analysis
- Role of Nav1.7 channels in nociceptor function
- Micro-neurography for human nerve recordings
Awards:
- Versus Arthritis Career Development Award (2026–2031)
His interdisciplinary approach combines neuroscience, immunology, and pharmacology to address the urgent need for better pain treatments for arthritis patients.
