Dr. Franziska Denk is a Reader in Neuroscience at King's College London, affiliated with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) and the Wolfson Sensory, Pain and Regeneration Centre. Her research focuses on the peripheral nervous system's role in chronic pain, particularly neuroimmune interactions and epigenetic mechanisms. She leads the Denk lab, which uses advanced tools like single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) and induced pluripotent stem cell models. She co-directs a Wellcome Trust PhD Training Scheme in Neuroimmune Interactions and holds an EDI Theme Representative role at the NIHR Maudsley BRC.
- Education: DPhil (Oxford), MSc (Oxford), BA (Oxford)
Her interdisciplinary research integrates molecular biology, immunology, and pain mechanisms to uncover drivers of persistent pain. Key collaborations include Prof. Leonie Taams (King's), Prof. David Bennett (Oxford), and Prof. Chris Buckley (Oxford).
Recent work highlights include identifying fibroblast subsets in neuropathic pain models and elucidating JAK-dependent activation of sensory neurons in rheumatoid arthritis. She has received the 2020 Emerging Leaders Prize from the Medical Research Foundation.
