Dr. George E. Shambaugh is a Professor of International Affairs and Government at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and Department of Government. He serves as Director of the Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) program and Interim Vice Dean of Graduate Affairs. Previously, he chaired the Department of Government. His research focuses on international politics, foreign policy, political economy, and environmental governance. He holds a B.A. from Oberlin College and advanced degrees from Columbia University.
Shambaugh authored influential works like Oracles, Heroes, or Villains? and States, Firms, and Power, co-edited volumes on environmental politics and foreign policy debates, and publishes in journals such as International Studies Quarterly and European Journal of Political Economy. His grants include NSF, MacArthur, and SSRC funding. He advises policymakers and served as a National Security Fellow for Senator Todd Young.
Recent scholarship emphasizes economic sanctions efficacy, public-private partnerships in environmental sectors, and maritime piracy dynamics. He has supervised numerous policy-focused research initiatives and remains a leading voice in US foreign policy analysis.
