Professor Mitchell's research centers on nonprofit and NGO studies, with particular emphasis on organizational management, leadership, governance, and strategy within transnational organizations. His work examines how NGOs navigate complex accountability structures, balance advocacy with service delivery, and maintain relevance in changing global contexts. He has made significant contributions to understanding the "architecture" of the nonprofit sector and how organizational structures can either facilitate or hinder impact.
His research often employs mixed-method approaches, combining qualitative and quantitative analysis to explore complex questions about nonprofit effectiveness, financial management, and organizational change. Mitchell has been particularly interested in how information costs affect charitable giving and nonprofit impact, as well as the relationship between organizational structure and effectiveness in transnational NGOs.
Professor Mitchell's scholarly output demonstrates a consistent focus on nonprofit governance, financial management, and organizational effectiveness. His recent work has increasingly addressed issues of power dynamics within transnational NGOs, examining how board composition, leadership approaches, and organizational structures influence effectiveness and accountability. He has also made significant contributions to understanding regulatory frameworks affecting nonprofits, particularly at the state level in the United States.
Among his notable achievements:
- Co-author of "Between Power and Irrelevance: The Future of Transnational NGOs" (Oxford University Press, 2020)
- Research Grant from Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership ($3,000, 2015)
- Travel Scholarship from Urban Institute Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy (2015)
- Daniel Patrick Moynihan Research Fellow (2011)
- Multiple fellowships including Goekjian Fellowship and Maxwell Dean's Fellowship
- Presidential Award for Academic Excellence from West Virginia University (2000, 2001)

He has directed significant research projects including the Transnational NGO Interview Study and has been involved in numerous collaborative research initiatives examining nonprofit financial models, governance structures, and regulatory environments. His work has attracted funding from various academic institutions and has informed practice through engagement with organizations like InterAction and the Urban Institute.
Professor Mitchell leads the Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management at the Marxe School, which serves as a hub for research, education, and practice in the nonprofit sector. The center facilitates connections between academic research and practical applications, hosting events, supporting student engagement, and producing research that addresses pressing challenges in nonprofit management. His leadership has helped position the center as an important resource for understanding the evolving landscape of nonprofit and NGO work in the United States and globally.
