Georgakilas Alexandros

Prof. Alexandros Georgakilas is a Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Physics at the University of Crete. He has held academic positions since 1995, progressing from Assistant Professor (1995–2002) to Associate Professor (2002–2010) before becoming a full Professor in 2010. He previously served as Chair of the Department (2019–2023).

• Education: BSc in Physics (University of Patras, 1984), MSc in Physics (University of Crete, 1989), PhD in Physics (University of Crete, 1990).

His research focuses on applied physics and materials science of advanced semiconductor materials and devices, particularly Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) of III-V nanostructure-heterostructure materials, integration of III-V devices on silicon substrates, and the interplay between structural properties and electronic behavior in III-V semiconductors. He has extensive experience in research collaborations, including roles at FORTH-IESL and international institutions like the University of Maryland (USA) and Thomson-CSF (France).

Prof. Georgakilas’ work emphasizes understanding material effects on device performance and advancing technologies for electronic/optoelectronic applications. He has delivered keynote lectures, such as at the 2023 Panhellenic Conference on Solid State Physics & Materials Science.
