Georg Zoidl is a Full Professor in the Department of Biology at York University, holding the Canada Research Chair for Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience. His research focuses on electrical synapses (gap junctions), their regulation via connexins and pannexins, and their roles in neural development, adult nervous system function, and pathological conditions like epilepsy and cancer. He uses zebrafish visual systems and mouse hippocampal models to investigate synaptic plasticity and neural communication, employing electrophysiology, multiphoton imaging, and behavioral analyses.
Research interests span molecular characterization of synapse proteins, transgenic animal models, and interdisciplinary approaches linking basic science to biomedical applications. His group welcomes students from Life Sciences, Health, and Engineering backgrounds.
- Awards: Canada Research Chair in Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience
- Advising: Eligible to supervise Biology Graduate Program students.
Labs/Teams: His interdisciplinary team integrates molecular, physiological, and engineering techniques to study neuronal networks and synaptic function.
