Georg Krücken (1958–2024) was a leading sociologist and Full Professor of Sociology and Higher Education Research at the University of Kassel. He served as Spokesperson of the Executive Board of the International Center for Higher Education Research (INCHER) and Director of INCHER-Kassel from 2011–2021. Previously, he held positions at the German University of Administrative Sciences (Speyer) and University of Bielefeld, where he contributed to Science and Technology Studies.
His research focused on neo-institutional theory, higher education governance, and organizational studies, with a particular emphasis on global trends in universities. He pioneered conceptual frameworks like Multiple Competitions in Higher Education and explored institutional isomorphism across European universities.
He held leadership roles including Chairman of the German Society for Higher Education Research (Gesellschaft für Hochschulforschung) and Spokesperson of the DFG Research Group on university competition dynamics. He contributed to leading journals such as Studies in Higher Education and Minerva, and edited influential volumes on globalization in higher education.
Key contributions include analyzing university leadership, the managerial turn in academia, and cross-sectoral knowledge transfer between public universities and private consultants. His work bridged macro-level societal structures with micro-level institutional practices.
