معرفی
Dr. Georg Kaser is a retired Professor for Climate and Cryospheric Research and former Dean of the Faculty of Geo- and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Innsbruck. He currently serves as Vice President of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) for Natural and Technical Sciences. His research focuses on glaciology, climatology, and hydrology in mountain regions, particularly in the Alps and tropical regions like East Africa and the Andes. Key interests include atmosphere-glacier interactions, mass/energy fluxes, and freshwater availability.
Education & Career
- PhD in Geography/Meteorology
- Full Professor (2010–2021)
- Prior roles: Associate/Assistant Professor (1985–2010)
- Retired March 2021
Research Highlights
He investigates climate-glacier relationships, tropical glacier retreat (Kilimanjaro, Mt. Kenya), and alpine hydrology. His work bridges atmospheric dynamics with glacier-scale processes using advanced modeling and field measurements. Contributions include global glacier mass change projections and IPCC assessments.
Awards & Recognition
- Nobel Peace Prize (2007) as part of the IPCC team
- Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art (2018)
- Full Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (2017)
Teaching & Outreach
He supervised 14 PhD students and >30 Master's/Diploma students. Organized international summer schools (e.g., Karthaus) and UNESCO training programs in glaciology. Led expeditions to the Andes, Himalayas, and East African mountains.
Labs & Teams
Associated with the Institute of Atmospheric and Cryospheric Sciences (ACINN), leading projects like Hintereisferner as an 'Open Air Laboratory' and the University of Innsbruck's Centre of Climate and Cryosphere.
