Prof. Dr. Georg Borges serves as Professor at Saarland University's Faculty of Law, holding the Chair of Civil Law, Legal Informatics, German and International Business Law and Legal Theory. He leads the Institute of Legal Informatics and directs several major initiatives including the Legal AI Project Saarbrücken (JIPS) and the LL.M. program in Information Technology and Law.
His research focuses on the intersection of law and technology, particularly examining AI regulation, data protection frameworks, civil law aspects of artificial intelligence, and legal informatics. Prof. Borges has developed the influential Saarbrücken Taxonomy for classifying AI systems under the EU AI Regulation, which enables precise determination of high-risk AI systems.
As a prominent scholar in legal technology, he actively participates in international collaborations, serving as Visiting Professor at Keio University in Tokyo. His work bridges academic research with practical legal applications, particularly in the evolving landscape of AI governance and regulation.
Prof. Borges regularly presents at major international conferences including the IEEE Smart World Congress and the German IT Court Conference, where his lectures on AI systems in the judiciary have drawn significant attention from nearly 80 participants at recent events.
He leads the Summer School IT Law and Legal Informatics, which brings together experts from multiple disciplines to examine AI governance, liability, and data protection from legal, technical, and ethical perspectives. His teaching portfolio includes courses on IT Law, Civil Law Aspects of Artificial Intelligence, and Legal Tech.
