Professor Georg A Holländer is the Hoffmann and Action Medical Research Professor of Developmental Medicine and Head of the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Oxford. He is also a Professorial Fellow at Jesus College, Oxford, and Director of the Botnar Research Centre for Child Health. His academic background includes an MD from Basel University Medical School, Switzerland, with advanced training at Harvard Medical School and the Basel Institute for Immunology.
His research focuses on the molecular and cellular control of thymus development and function, particularly in health and disease. Key interests include T cell development, thymic epithelial cell biology, and immunological tolerance mechanisms. He has led research grants such as the Wellcome Trust Strategic Award (2014) and published extensively on thymic function, T cell maturation, and autoimmune processes.
Recent work explores thymic regeneration using gene-modified cells and 3D scaffolds, as well as the role of retinoic acid signaling in thymopoiesis. His contributions include over 60 peer-reviewed articles, with a focus on structural biology of transcription factors and epigenetic regulation of antigen expression in thymic epithelia. Awards include Fellowship of the Medical Sciences (FMedSc).
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate immunology and postgraduate courses on T cell and developmental immunology. His work bridges basic science and clinical paediatric medicine, addressing challenges in global child health through interdisciplinary collaborations.
