Geoffrey McKay is a Lecturer of Applied Trumpet in the Lionel Hampton School of Music at the University of Idaho, part of the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. He joined the brass faculty in January 2024. He also serves as an adjunct faculty member at Spokane Community College, teaching History of Popular Music and Music Appreciation.
His educational background includes an AA Transfer Degree from Columbia Basin College, a BA and MM in trumpet performance from Central Washington University, a Post-Masters Artist Certificate in Orchestral Trumpet from Georgia State University, and he is currently a Doctoral Candidate (ABD) in trumpet performance at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. He also holds a Cognate in Music History from CWU and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Musicology from UNCG.
Geoffrey's research focuses on the social connotation and sonic coding of the trumpet in popular film, aiming to subvert traditional portrayals through performance. His broader interests include popular, punk, and metal music and their intersections with political discourse and social movements. He has performed as a substitute musician with several regional orchestras in Washington and North Carolina and has appeared as a soloist with the Inland NW Orchestra and the Spokane Symphony.
His notable recognitions include being named a Musicfest NW Collegiate Young Artist and winning soloist competitions with the Inland NW Orchestra.
