Dr. Geoffrey Ma Tao-Li serves as Honorary Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law, The University of Hong Kong, and Honorary Chair/Professor at the University of Birmingham, following his tenure as Chief Justice of Hong Kong (2010-2021).
He earned an LLB from the University of Birmingham, was called to the English Bar (Gray's Inn) in 1978, Hong Kong Bar in 1980, Victorian Bar (Australia) in 1983, and Singapore Bar in 1990, and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1993.
His professional expertise centers on Law with deep specialization in Constitutional Law, Judiciary operations, and the Rule of Law, reflecting his distinguished judicial career and international legal contributions.
Major honors include:
- Officier de l’Ordre de la Legion d’Honneur by France (2015)
- Honorary Doctorates from University of Birmingham (2011), CUHK (2016), HKU (2019), and Lingnan University (2020)
- Honorary Bencher of Gray’s Inn (2004) and Middle Temple (2016)
- Honorary Fellow of Harris Manchester College, Oxford (2012)
Dr. Ma also serves as Patron of the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law and International Advocacy Training Council, with prior judicial roles including Chief Judge of the High Court (2003) and Justice of Appeal (2002).
