Geoffrey Lawrence Cohen is the James G. March Professor of Organizational Studies in Education and Business at Stanford University's Graduate School of Education, and Professor of Psychology in the School of Humanities and Sciences. His research focuses on processes that shape belonging and identity, particularly in educational and organizational settings. Cohen has held faculty roles at Yale University and the University of Colorado, Boulder, and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles.
He earned his PhD in Psychology from Stanford University (1998) and BA in Psychology from Cornell University (1992). His work emphasizes theory-driven interventions to address social challenges like stereotype threat, identity safety, and academic disparities. Key contributions include the development of self-affirmation interventions and social-belonging programs shown to reduce achievement gaps.
Cohen has received numerous awards including the Robert Cialdini Award (2015/2016) and Excellence in Ethics Best Paper Award (2013). He has secured over $10 million in grants from NSF, NIH, and foundations like Raikes and Gates. His research spans education policy, health disparities, and organizational behavior, with interventions implemented at scale in schools and workplaces.
