Geoffrey Buckle

Dr. Geoffrey Buckle is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he serves as a medical oncologist specializing in gastrointestinal cancers. He is affiliated with the UCSF Global Cancer Program and actively contributes to global oncology research, particularly focused on sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Buckle is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer.

He earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2015, completed residency and fellowship training in internal medicine and medical oncology at UCSF, and holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (2011). His educational background also includes a BA from Colby College (2007).

Dr. Buckle's research centers on improving cancer outcomes in underserved populations, with a focus on esophageal and gastrointestinal cancers in sub-Saharan Africa. His work investigates region-specific risk factors, develops early detection strategies (such as esophageal sponge sampling), and designs implementation frameworks for cancer care in resource-limited settings. He has contributed significantly to understanding the burden of diseases like Burkitt lymphoma and esophageal cancer in African populations.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on global oncology, implementation science, and cancer epidemiology. Key themes include health systems strengthening in Tanzania, resource-stratified clinical guidelines, microbiome research in esophageal cancer, and disparities in global clinical trial access. His work often involves large, multi-institutional collaborations and consortia such as the African Esophageal Cancer Consortium (AfrECC).
