Geoffrey Beattie is a Professor of Psychology at Edge Hill University and a Visiting Scholar at the Oxford Centre for Life-Writing (OCLW) and Wolfson College, University of Oxford. He holds a First Class Honours in Psychology from the University of Birmingham (BSc) and a PhD from the University of Cambridge (Trinity College), focusing on language production in face-to-face interaction. His research spans implicit processes in decision-making, nonverbal communication, climate change psychology, and implicit racial bias. He has published over 120 academic articles and 27 books, including works on multimodal communication and climate change mitigation. His awards include the Spearman Medal and Mouton d’Or, and he is a Chartered Psychologist and Fellow of multiple societies.
Beattie’s research on climate change emphasizes psychological barriers to mitigation, while his work on multimodal communication examines gestures’ role in semantic communication. He has advised organizations like Unilever and contributed to UN initiatives. His media engagements include appearances on BBC, Channel 4, and radio shows, popularizing psychology through books like Get the Edge and Why Aren’t We Saving the Planet?
