He is a member of the University of Rochester Medical Faculty Group (URMFG) and Accountable Health Partners (AHP), providing specialized care in Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Dr. Weinberg practices at UR Medicine, focusing on all areas of Pediatric Infectious Diseases with special emphasis on Pediatric HIV/AIDS medicine, clinical immunology, immunization, and assessment of recurrent infections and fevers of unknown cause including pediatric travel medicine/tropical medicine.
Dr. Weinberg received his MD from Indiana University School of Medicine-Indianapolis in 1982, completed his Pediatrics internship and residency at Washington University School of Medicine (1982-1984), and completed his fellowship at St. Louis Children's Hospital (1984-1988). His research has spanned several decades with continuous publication output through 2025.
Dr. Weinberg's research interests focus on vaccine-preventable diseases, particularly respiratory and enteric infections. His current work centers on the integration of vaccine-preventable enteric and respiratory disease epidemiologic and laboratory surveillance with the goal of improving vaccine delivery and efficacy through the New Vaccine Surveillance Network (funded by CDC contract). Past research includes clinical trials of new pharmaceuticals, biologics, and vaccines in children and pregnant women infected with HIV (through the International Maternal, Pediatric, and Adolescent Clinical Trials Network, funded by NIH/NICHD contract). Additional research interests include the role of iron in infection (particularly with HIV and Pneumocystis carinii), vaccine biology, and infectious diseases epidemiology.
His publication record shows a strong focus on respiratory viruses (RSV, influenza, human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza), rotavirus, norovirus, and vaccine effectiveness. Recent publications (2024-2025) emphasize surveillance of respiratory viruses, vaccine impact assessment, and antiviral treatment patterns in children. His work consistently appears in high-impact journals including Pediatrics, JAMA, and Clinical Infectious Diseases.
