Senior Professor Geoff Spinks leads the School of Mechanical, Materials, Mechatronic and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wollongong. He holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne (1990), specializing in polymer mechanics and artificial muscle materials. As founder of UOW Makerspace, he bridges innovation and academia. His research focuses on smart materials, hydrogel actuators, and soft robotics, with 240+ journal articles (including 7 in Science), 17,000+ citations, and an h-index of 62. Industrial collaborations include BHP Research and Allied Signal Inc. He pioneered UOW’s nanotechnology degrees and has supervised 25 PhD and 50+ honors students.
Research interests include 3D printing of functional materials, energy-efficient actuators, and environmental applications of smart polymers. He directs major grants like the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science. Notable projects include bionic muscle-based cardiac devices and wearable tech for medical support. Awards include Royal Society grants and industry partnerships.
Teaching contributions span all engineering materials levels. Labs include the UOW Makerspace and collaborations with global networks like the EU’s MICACT project. Current work explores low-temperature actuation and biomimetic materials for healthcare and environmental solutions.
