Dr Geoff Bates is a Lecturer and Research Fellow at the University of Bath’s Institute for Policy Research (IPR), serving as Deputy Director of Studies for the Professional Doctorate in Policy Research & Practice. He holds a Research Fellow position in the Department of Social & Policy Sciences and is affiliated with the Centre for 21st Century Public Health.
Education:
- PhD in Public Health from Liverpool John Moores University (2016–2019)
- MSc in Health Psychology from Aston University (2007–2008)
Research Interests: Dr Bates focuses on improving public health and reducing inequalities through addressing social, political, and economic determinants of health. His work emphasizes evidence-informed policy design and evaluation, particularly in urban development systems. He leads the evaluation of the TRUUD project, a six-year initiative to reform urban planning to prevent non-communicable diseases. His research spans substance use, homelessness, climate change, and sustainable urban policies.
Teaching & Supervision: He teaches health policy, public health, and research methods (qualitative methods, evidence synthesis, participatory approaches) at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He supervises doctoral students and directs the Doctorate in Policy Research and Practice.
Grants & Projects:
- Lead evaluator for the TRUUD project (MRC-funded, 2019–2025)
- Co-investigator on the Health Hub project (MRC, 2024–2028)
- Principal Investigator on an NIHR-funded evaluation of intervention gaps (2020–2021)
Labs & Collaborations: His work involves transdisciplinary teams and partnerships with organizations like NICE, the West Midlands Combined Authority, and international collaborators in Denmark and Norway. He contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those addressing health, sustainability, and equity.
