Genevieve Bates is an Assistant Professor of International Relations in the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC), effective July 2021. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Chicago (2021) and was previously a postdoctoral fellow at Brown University’s Watson Institute. Her research focuses on transitional justice, the impact of accountability mechanisms on democracies, and the role of international institutions like the International Criminal Court. Methodologically, she employs game theory, qualitative interviews, and quantitative analysis.
She is affiliated with the Transitional Justice and Democratic Stability Lab and has held fellowships at the Center for International Social Science Research and the Pozen Family Center for Human Rights. Before UBC, she will join the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an Assistant Professor. Her work examines how transitional justice mechanisms influence political transitions and democratic resilience, with a particular interest in combining formal theoretical approaches with empirical research.
