Gene Trantham is an Associate Professor of Music Theory and former Chair of the Musicology/Composition/Theory Department at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). He also coordinates the College of Musical Arts' Faculty Scholar Series. His primary teaching responsibilities include undergraduate music theory, aural skills, and graduate courses in theory pedagogy, analysis/performance, and counterpoint.
Education:
- PhD in Music Theory from University of Wisconsin-Madison
- MM in Music Theory from University of Missouri-Kansas City
- BM in Piano Performance and BME in Choral Music from Ouachita Baptist University
Research Interests:
- Development of innovative teaching methods in music theory
- Rol of technology in music instruction
- Performance-informed analysis of Mozart, Chopin, and Schumann
- Study of 17th-century composers like Frescobaldi
Professional Engagement:
- Served as GRE/AP Music Theory Reader for Educational Testing Service (since 1991)
- Presenter at Society for Music Theory, College Music Society, and other national conferences
- Authored Instructor’s Resources for The Musician’s Guide to Theory and Analysis
Conducting Work:
- Directed Ohio Ambassadors Chorus on European tours (2001, 2003, 2015, 2017)
- Music Director of Perrysburg Symphony Chorale
- Guest conductor for multiple ensembles across the US
